fitness testing 101

Part A - The Mile Run
Directive:
Mark beginning spot.
Drive car one mile and mark end spot.
Come back, start the timer and GO!

The Event:
Decided beginning spot.
Drove car 1/2 mile and turned around so we could at least end at home.
Started the timer and GO!
The kids shot off with amazing amounts of energy and speed. I thought for sure that that would lap me - especially since I was barely jogging.
notsomuch.
They were done with running at about 1/10th of a mile. They walked mostly after that. Anna was holding my hand so we did a pretty good job of walking with an occasional set of jogging steps. There was a lot more walking than jogging and the running that happened in the first few seconds... well... yeah... that was nice.
By the time we hit the 1/2 mile mark we were DONE!
We all sat down on the ground.
I tried to stretch out my cramped shin splints and the kiddos rested.
There was no way we were going to finish the mile! Ha ha!

The walk home went like this:
Simon says take 50 steps backwards.
Let's try skipping for a little bit.
Who can run the fastest to that sign?
Hey - do you know how to do a scissors step?
Hey - there's Papa in his truck! Hey - can you give us a ride?? What? What do you mean there's no rides in school!?!
Let's race to the railroad tracks. Wait there for me.
Let's cut across this field - it's a shortcut. (Cowboy says it's not a short cut - it's a field trip now.)
Oh we're almost home!
Hallelujah - we made it!

I think we're better at setting lofty goals than running real races :)

I wouldn't be able to do it, either. At least you tried. Next week have them tread water.
It could be Home School Navy Seal Training.
I think I'm on to something here.

This was great! I would have had to put twinkies at the end of the road or ice cream for the motivational aspect.
you know...pack back on the calories you just burned...
